Photograph of a diamond mine in Griqualand-West. There are two men sitting at a table in the foreground. Behind are rows of deep trenches with men and machinery along the narrow ledges between them. A settlement of huts and tents can be seen in the distance. Griqualand-West was a British colony in southern Africa. The discovery of diamonds in the area led to vast excavation sites and the mass immigration of workers.
