Fruit peddlers in the street

Daguerreotype, 1/6 plate
Larry Gottheim, Be-hold, Inc
Courtesy of Larry Gottheim (Auction: Feb 21, 2008, 51, part 1 / lot 40)

LL/27063

Father at right with a basket, son at left beside a crate of apples. Their wagon displays their wares in what must be the poor section of town. 1/6 plate just in a preserver, with the trace of a prior scalloped mat, removed to show more of the image.

The plate is rubbed, the right side light. Not at all well preserved, but nevertheless a precious record of a very rare if not unique daguerreian subject. This type of subject matter is almost never found in daguerreotypes. These subjects could not have afforded to commission this daguerreotype. The artist must have wanted to preserve this record for some personal motive that must be honored today. I present this as a tribute to my friend Ken Appollo, author of "Humble Work & Mad Wanderings; Street Life in the Machine Age." 1/6 plate in full case with original spine.
