51. Male costumes, traditional costumes, Senja, Troms. Portrait of same leather clothing standing in photography studio with neutral background and patterned carpet. He keeps cane in his right hand.

The picture is from the series "Norwegian Nationaldragter" taken by photographer Marcus Selmer (1819-1900), Bergen. Inventory of Selmer folk costume series can be found in his catalog published in 1872. The design here is number 51 of the series' 129 numbers card size, where several designs are also available in larger formats. Most should be done about 1862-1866, preferably in the studio in Bergen. Same design with costume and model was fitted over neutral background for various drawing interiors or exteriors with other processed detail, also to individual photographed exteriors. The suits were colored by hand, without particular regard to the correct colors. Selmer photographs are often equipped with stamp or label that can contribute to dating, but rarely on the year. Besides, later manipulations of older designs do dating uncertain. The image here is colored by hand and has a label that should have been used from 1862 to 1866.
