The date is an estimate based on similar cases studied by Sean Nolan who wrote "This case is one I've dated to 1852-1856. The case gilding pattern, mat, are both consistent with that date. I can't see the preserver well enough to identify it. Based on the silk pad and pebbled mat, I would say the early end of the range is most likely, 1852-53." (5 Sept 2015).
