Group photograph of Afghan Sardars or Chiefs with Major Cavagnari, in front of a tent, on a patterned carpet. Sir Pierre Louis Napoleon Cavagnari (1841-79) is seated in the middle, cross-legged; to his left is Badshah Kunar Syed, a powerful Afghan chief; to his right is Sardar Kala Khan, the emissary between Emir Yakub Khan and the British. Some figures are blurred. Most of the men are dressed in traditional Afghan dress, except for one who wears an European military uniform (second from left, seated). This was taken in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80).

Photograph in album presented by the Earl of Lytton (1831-91), Viceroy of India to Queen Victoria in 1880
