The Illustration magazine was to play a major part in the diffusion of the color photography process patented by Auguste and Louis LumiŪre in 1903. First of all, it is at the magazine headquarters in Paris that the "miracle of color photography" was officially unveiled on June 10, 1907. The press conference by Auguste Lumiere marked the commercial launch of the product. The guests of the Illustration were presented with color pictures of the LumiŪres, and also of Leon Gimpel, a journalist at the magazine, and a pioneer of photo reportage. Leon Gimpel was initiated to color photography by the LumiŪre Brothers themselves, and therefore he was the ideal person to introduce the new process to the readership of the magazine, which he did in a very didactic and scientific way in this supplement of three pages of text and three pages of pictures published on June 15, 1907.
