In the book Shannon Thomas Perich The Changing Face of Portrait Photography: From Daguerreotype to Digital (Washington, DC: National Museum of American History, 2010) p.24 it is stated that Cameron believed that females could stand in for male saints because the Christian message was more important than gender.
