Photograph of the entrance to Chandragupta Cave, taken by Joseph David Beglar in the 1870s. At Udaygiri in the modern state of Madhya Pradesh there are about twenty rock cut caves dating to the Gupta period. Most are just niches however some form columned temples. This cave is labelled number six and dates to around 402. The doorway is decorated with figures of river goddesses standing on makaras, aquatic monsters, and two pillars with fluted capitals. The walls have sculpture panels of deities on either side depicting guardians and images of Vishnu as Varaha and Durga and there is an inscription of Chandragupta II above.
