| John Murray The Chowk, the Main Street in Agra 1853-1858 Salted paper print 37.5 x 46.4 cm (image) The Royal Collection RCIN 2701444 LL/90978 Photograph of the Chowk, the main street in Agra. It is a wide street with buildings on either side. The buildings house market stalls which are shaded by protruding grass canopies. People can be seen sitting by the stalls or on the balconies above, but they are blurred through movement. A large shadow is falling over the street from the left.
This is one of a series of photographs of Agra by Dr John Murray which were published in a volume with accompanying captions by J Middleton. Murray was an East India Company doctor who used waxed-paper negatives to produce photographs of the Mughal architecture of Agra and the surrounding area.
