Photograph of Lawrence 'Titus' Oates with a spade in his right hand and his left hand on a hay bale. Captain Lawrence ’Titus’ Oates (1880-1912) had served in the army before joining Scott’s expedition. He accompanied Scott to the Pole, but on the return journey he was badly affected by frostbite and delayed his companions. Aware of the danger they were facing because of him, Oates stepped out of the tent into a blizzard with the words, ’I am just going outside and may be some time’. His body was never found.

Presented to King George V, 1914
