This photograph, which was published in Alfred Maudslay’s Archaeology, shows his assistant Lorenzo Giuntini working in the hot and humid conditions of Quirigua, preparing a piece-mould of Zoomorph P. The plaster of Paris mould, which in this case comprised over six hundred individual pieces, could afterwards be reassembled away from the site to enable a reproduction cast of the enormous stone carving to be made.
