This image was reproduced in "Scenic Glories of the Western United States," National Geographic Magazine August, 1929, Volume LVI, Number Two. The image caption read: "Eagle Feathers Adorn the Headdress of the Brave. Santa Clara Indians wear striking costumes in their tribal dances. Each detail in the crown of plumes has its traditional meaning."
A self-taught photographer, Clatworthy (1875-1953) was known for his Autochromes, black-andwhite, and hand-colored photographs that he promoted in his Estes Park, CO, studio to visiting tourists. Over one hundred of his Autochromes appeared in National Geographic Magazine between 1923 and 1934. In addition to his stunning work documenting the Western United States, Clatworthy traveled widely, photographing scenic wonders in Mexico, New Zealand, and Hawaii.
