The American Palestine Exploration Society was founded in New York in 1870 as a privately funded society for archaeological and geographic exploration of the Holy Land. A forerunner of the American Schools of Oriental Research, the organization conducted its second expedition to the Holy Land in 1875 and hired French photographer TancrÞde Dumas, who owned a studio in Beirut, to accompany the expedition.
