August Sander included the portrait of his 23-year-old son Erich, at that time a student of national economics and philosophy at the University of Cologne, in the sub-category "Der Gelehrte" (The Scholar) of Group 4 "Die Stände" (The Stands) of his opus "Menschen des 20. Jahrhunderts" (People of the 20th Century). Due to his activities in political resistance as a member of the Socialist Workers' Party of Germany, Erich Sander was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1934 and died in Siegburg prison in 1944, shortly before his release.
