In 1851 Hugo left France as a self-exiled opponent to the government of Napoleon III. In 1862 his Belgian publisher Lacroix held a banquet in Brussels in his honor to celebrate the publication of Les Miserables, which many friends attended from France. On this occasion Nadar, Carjat and Petit all seemed to have photographed him.
