| Herbert G. Ponting The ramparts of Mount Erebus 1911, July-August Carbon print 72.2 x 58.9 cm (image) The Royal Collection RCIN 2580027 LL/93540 Photograph of a cliff of Barne Glacier in the foreground, with the volcano, Mount Erebus behind. Mount Erebus, an active volcano on Ross Island which last erupted in 2008, was first climbed in 1908 by members of Shackleton’s Nimrod expedition. This photograph is one of Ponting’s most dramatic images. He has contrasted the overwhelming size of the natural world against the tiny human figure pulling a sledge, in the lower left corner of the photograph.
