Photograph of Jamrud Fort, looking towards the Khyber Pass. The fort can be seen in the distance with the mountains of the Khyber Pass behind. On the open land directly in front of the fort there is an encampment of tents and small huts. On a rocky ledge in the foreground to the right there is a group of men, many carrying guns. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
