Photograph of the railway lines at Balaklava, viewed from Guard's Hill. In the foreground there is a hillside with several small wooden huts and tents and piles of wooden railway track. The valley can be seen behind, with tracks running across it. To the right are two small hills with rows of tents below. Canrobert's Hill can be seen in the distance. The Crimean War was among the first conflicts to utilise railways. A rail track was built by a partnership of English railway contractors to bring ammunition and supplies from Balaklava to allied troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol who were camped in the surrounding countryside.
