Photograph of a hunting scene set in India with a painted backdrop representing a wooded scene. Four Indian gentlemen stand, each adopting various poses as if a hunt had just taken place. On the floor is placed a dead tiger. The man on the left holds a spear to the tiger's head whilst another rests his foot on the torso of the tiger. Second from the right is Hafiz Mohammed Abdul Karim (1863-1909) who faces three-quarters to the left, holding a shotgun. The man on the right also faces three-quarters to the left and holds a spear. This tableau was performed on Queen Victoria's 75th birthday in the Ballroom at Balmoral Castle as part of a birthday surprise. The Queen recorded in her journal that 'the Indian Hunting Scene very well done & very realistic' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 24th May 1894
