Portrait of Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II of Jaipur (r.1835-80) from the 'Album of cartes de visite portraits of Indian rulers and notables' by Bourne and Shepherd, early 1870s. Jaipur, in Rajasthan, was controlled by the descendants of the Kachwaha Rajputs. Sawai Ram Singh (1835-1880) succeeded as Maharaja in 1835, though Jaipur was controlled by a council of regency until 1851. He was created a Knight Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India in 1877. He was also created a Counsellor of the Empress in 1877 and a Knight Grand Commander of India in 1880. Sawai Ram Singh's accomplishments included promoting road construction, irrigation, and education.
