"It was in Creative Camera that I first saw Tony's work. It clicked with me immediately because I was also enthralled (and still am) with the cameras ability to capture the serendipity of life and the simultaneous realities that exist at the same time in the same place. After a few years of making photographs I decided to get a degree in it. In 1971 I went to the San Francisco Art Institute, To my great surprise, I saw that Ray-Jones was there. I took a portfolio to show him and he let me sit in his honors class ....... he had a rough time with the students.... things were changing from the documentary tradition to the more experimental and conceptual, so the critiques became quite abrasive. Upon his advice I dropped out of the undergraduate program and applied to the graduate school. We were not far apart in age, I was 26 at the time so he was more of a friend and mentor to me while I was in the graduate program. He died six months after I moved back to the Bahamas.
