After the end of the Crimean War, in 1856, retired soldiers of Jewish origin were permitted to settle in towns for pursuing artisan occupations, and in 1859, most of restrictions on residence of all other Jews in Crimean towns were canceled. In the 1860s, the number of the Jewish community increased; the construction of synagogues started all over Crimea.
 
The photograph was displayed at the Russian Ethnographic Exhibition of 1867 in Moscow.
