Mustered Out on 6/16/1865 at Chattanooga, TN 1862-1865 Tintype, 1/9 plate, hardtack frame National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution Division of Armed Forces History, Catalog number: 1979.0916.01 LL/54135 This picture frame is made of hardtack, a cracker-like biscuit soldiers ate during the Civil War. Inside is a tintype photo of Augustus B. Hayes. At the age of 18, Hayes enlisted in the First Regiment Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery Battery B on August 8, 1862.
Hayes was wounded on December 31, 1862, in the Battle of Stones River. Despite this, he served three more years and was mustered out June 16, 1865.
