Indian photographer Lßlß Deen Dayal (1844-1910) started working about 1870, becoming the official photographer to the viceroy and later to the nizain (ruler) of Hyderabad. At the turn of the century he made before-and-after images of starving children who were fed by the nizam to provide evidence of his government's relief programs. In his Indian Ancient Architecture Album (1893), symmetrical landscape compositions and effective use of light, as in Water Palace Deeg, create a sense of timelessness. Dayal's photography business is still run by his descendants today.
