Photograph of the bridge at Gandamak. A stream is running through a rocky plain with a high stone bridge in the middle distance. There is an area of raised rock to the right, on which there are a number of trees. The mountains extend into the distance behind, their peaks covered with snow. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.
