Extraordinary English quarter-plate ambrotype of a gorgeous young girl holding her large doll. The photographer certainly aimed to impress with this image it has elaborate hand tinting and is contained in a stunning passe-partout presentation. What resemble inlaid jewels along the border are actually small pieces of inset colored glass but the desired effect has been expertly achieved with sparkling colors and exquisite cuts. The young girl has her hair done in ringlets and wears blue/lavender tinted dress and gold gilded bracelets on her wrists. Her doll wears a beautiful white dress with a belt tinted in the same lavender color. The table cloth has been tinted a different shade of blue and peach pattern. The vase has gold highlights and the flowers have been tinted peach and orange with some green leaf highlights. The curtain on the right side also has gold highlights. This stunning image is in very good plus condition with very lovely tones and contrast. When viewed at an angle we see some crazing visible in the black backing. We opened the back to clean the cover glass and secured the image with some archival tape before resealing the back. There is a notation on the back that is difficult to read (included with larger scan of image). We are not sure if this is the identity of the girl or possibly the photographer. The image is housed in a later frame which has a label for Olympic Photographic Works, 112 St. Mary’s Road, Southampton.
