Note: this very early Alfred Stieglitz photograph was taken in Munich, Germany in 1886. Known as "The Card Players", we learn more about this photograph from the introduction of volume one of "The Key Set" by Sarah Greenough and published by The National Gallery of Art: on page xv of the introduction from Volume One (1886-1922): "When Stieglitz visited the painter (Frank Simon (Sime) Herrmann ) in 1886 in Munich, Herrmann helped him stage a photograph, The Card Players, after Grutzner's (Eduard) hackneyed study of the same subject." A footnote to this information reveals more about the photograph: Footnote #40 (from page LII of the introduction) "Noting that The Card Players was "a genre picture like a painting by Meissonier or Zamacois," Charles De Kay, in "The Photographer as Artist," The New York Times Illustrated Magazine (4 June 1899), 7, stated that the players were three Munich students who had just returned from a costume party. Peter Hastings Falk in Frank S. Herrmann, 1866-1942: A Separate Reality (Madison, Connecticut, 1988), 10, identifies Herrmann as the figure on the right in The Card Players and Stieglitz as the one on the left.
