Notes from the auction house:

In 2007 Vera Lutter photographed a series for several weeks at the Frankfurt airport. The presented b/w photograph was created using a technique she discovered in 1992/94: she used a camera obscura, a pinhole camera that reflected a mirror image of the exterior. The format of the photograph equals to the backpanel of the camera obscura which in it's dimensions corresponds to a room, an accessible chamber. Due to the long exposure time the image unites the traces of several air planes. In an interview with Adam Budak, Vera Lutter explained that her intention in creating these airport images was "... to photograph transfer, exchange and the rapid sequence of means of transport. Each air plane added a certain amount of grey shades to the image. The total of these shades of grey and black then produces a recognizable but not distinct representation of 'an air plane'..." (transl. and quoted after: Vera Lutter. Inside In. p. 46).
