The cover photograph is of the Fort Peck Dam, Montana and the first issue of LIFE included the photo essay "Franklin Roosevelt Has a Wild West" that is claimed by Maitland Edey to be the first true photo essay published anywhere. The photo essay is reprinted in "Great Photographic Essays from LIFE" Commentary by Maitland Edey (Boston, New York Graphic Society, 1978)
