Charles Gounod's operas include Sapho (1851), Faust (1859), Philémon et Baucis (1860), and Roméo et Juliette (1867). He also wrote sacred songs, masses, and an oratorio, The Redemption (1882). With its great lyrical appeal and emotional power, his music inspired many French composers of the late nineteenth century.
