Curatorial notes
As Ophelia laments "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance; pray, love, remember: and there is pansies, that's for thoughts." (Hamlet, Act 4, Scene 5).
An allegory is the representation of a spiritual and abstract meaning through a material form or the figurative treatment of one subject under the guise of another.
Within the language of flowers (floriography) flowers and floral arrangements are used to send coded messages - the gift of red roses symbolic of love. With a hammer and sickle there is a representation of physical labour and strength and their symbolic meaning transcends physical tools. Within allegorical, advertising, commercial, and propaganda photography the content communicates in, obvious and less obvious, guises deeper meanings. |
