Photograph of a Buddhist tomb near Ali Masjid. The stone tomb is tiered and has ornate carvings of the Buddha and animals. Sections of the tomb are damaged and the upper right corner is crumbling away. There are mountains behind. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. As well as photographing key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict he also captured interesting archaeological sites.
