Photograph of a group of Afghan prisoners with a British Army escort. The Afghan men are standing at the centre of the group wearing loose robes and turbans. Sikh soldiers wearing military uniform and turbans and holding guns are standing around them. A soldier wearing uniform and a helmet is standing to the far right. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. In addition to photographing landscapes and key strategic sites he captured prominent Afghan tribes and soldiers involved in the conflict.
