| Robert Howlett Leviathan (The Great Eastern), Side View of Hull 1857 (ca) Albumen silver print 11 1/4 x 14 1/8 ins George Eastman Museum LL/33159 In this composition the bulk of the vessel is cut off and the camera is positioned upward so that the hull towers over us. Backlighting causes the two figures on the bow to almost vaporize, giving the sensation that the humans are inconsequential. Howlett's tight framing utilizes the edges of the frame, leaving the impression that the ship goes on indefinitely.
