The Swiss Frédèric "Fred" Boissonnas took over his father's photographic studio in Geneva in 1888 and was particularly successful with pictorialist portraits. In 1903, Nadar, who was impoverished at the time, also gave him his studio in Marseille. In the same year, Boissonnas travelled to Greece for the first time, followed by four more stays until 1913. He became famous for the photographs he took there. His photo book "En Grece. Par Monts Et Par Vaux", which was published by Eleftheroudakis in 1910. In addition to ancient monuments and sights, the beautifully designed volume also shows scenes of everyday life, which are valued today as important documents of Greece's cultural history. These include the motif offered here of a goatherd with his flock in front of the Taygetos Mountains on the Peloponnese Peninsula. The excellently executed carbon print is exceptionally large-format for this technique, which was particularly used in Pictorialism.
