Uncommon early caricature tintype showing an original Cassius M. Coolidge cut-out drawing of a gent riding his donkey cart with crumpled top hat, umbrella and the signature catlike dog chasing behind the cart. The image shows Coolidge’s early signature of “Kash Del” as he was known by his family as well as the Pat’d Apr. 14, 1874 along with “No. 21.” The detail image has been flipped horizontally for easier reading of the backward writing.

Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (1844-1934) was born in Antwerp, New York then raised in Philadelphia. He worked at one point as a druggist, sign painter, cartoonist, founded a bank and a newspaper ending up in Rochester where he began his best known work of dog paintings in human situations. Although not the first to produce these carnival type caricature cut-out drawings for putting your head through, Coolidge managed to acquire the patent No. 149,724 for his version placing him at the forefront of comic photographic renderings.
