Steve's image of the "Afghan Girl" was made in Pakistan in 1984 and ran on the cover of National Geographic in 1985. The girl, Sharbat Gula was 13 at the time. Her identity remained unknown for 17 years after several attempts by McCurry to locate her. In January of 2002, a team from National Geographic finally located her in a remote region of Afghanistan and she vividly recalled be photographed since it was the one and only time she had been photographed.
