Padang was the administrative capital and also the port of the province of Sumatra's west coast, which was one of the economically most important regions of the colony of Dutch India. Westsumatra exported a large amount of high-quality coffees and other agricultural products. Also located in the highlands of Minangkabau one of the largest hard coal mining areas of the colony.
