This photograph of the Fort Peck Dam, Montana was used on the front cover of the first issue of LIFE. The magazine included the photo essay "Franklin Roosevelt Has a Wild West" that is claimed by Maitland Edey to be the first true photo essay published anywhere. The photo essay is reprinted in "Great Photographic Essays from LIFE" Commentary by Maitland Edey (Boston, New York Graphic Society, 1978)
