Important medal not only because of whom it was awarded to but was amongst the very first exhibition medals to be presented by what is now the Royal Photographic Society. Due to the expense of the medal only the first 18 exhibition medals where struck in silver. The remainder which were awarded well into the 1950s where struck in bronze.

These large and impressive medals became amongst the most sort after 19th century exhibition prize medals a photographer could aspire to win. The medal was open to all photographers.

Some other notable winners of this medal are Abney, Woodbury, H.P. Robinson, A. Stieglitz and F. Sutcliffe.
