Born in Germany Henry Ries went to America as a young man. He volunteered for service in WWII and served as an Army-Air Force photographer. After the war he was editor and chief photographer for OMGUS OBSERVER, an American weekly in Berlin and then as a European photojournalist for the New York Times and Time Magazine. He took the present famous image of the Berlin Airlift during this time and it was used for a U.S. postage stamp issued in 1998.
