(Beverly Wilgus, 1 January 2023) Above the heads of this pair is backward writing (tintypes are mirror images) "12 FOR". I think that outside the frame is a price, most likely 25¢ since that is the price I see most often in advertising for studios and itinerant photographers of the period.
