From 1947 - 1952 Herbert Strässer attended the State Art School in Saarbrücken where he studied under Hannes Neuner. From 1952 - 54 he attended the ècole nationale supérieure de beaux-arts de Paris. Strässer was a pupil of Otto Steinert under whom he studied experimental photography between1954 - 55. In 1955 Steinert commissioned him with the design of the dust jacket cover for the book "subjektive fotografie 2". The influence of Fotoform and a more abstract approach to photography clearly influenced Strässer's work. He also designed many advertising posters and produced a large body of drawings and graphic works. Later Strässer turned more to sculpture and supplied the designs for several European Awards.
