Returning from Paris in 1932, Miller established her own photographic studio in New York and became a skilled fashion photographer. This elegant image features Miller as the model in a closely cropped shot of her profile. The composition is balanced, with the curls of her hair echoed in the ruffled trimming of her gown and her pastel complexion contrasting the velvety blackness of the material. It is one of a series of photographs taken during the photo shoot which show Miller seated gracefully on an upholstered armchair. A slightly larger composition, which is regarded as the most accomplished of Miller’s fashion pictures, was published in American Vogue on 1 March 1933.
