Curatorial description (Accessed: 15 February 2015)

Day produced a series of photographs depicting the story of Christ, including several of these Crucifixion scenes and 'The Seven Worlds', showing a dying Christ. These scenes were staged near Day's home in Norwood, Boston, using himself as a suitably emaciated figure. Meticulous attention was given to historical detail; he imported cedar wood from Lebanon for the cross and used a mirror attached to the camera with a long shutter release cable to achieve the correct facial expressions. About 50 of Day's friends and hired helpers assisted in the making of the crucifixion series.
