An iconic image of modern dance, this expressive photograph was later used for the design of a German postage stamp celebrating Wigman's 100th birthday in 1986. It shows Mary Wigman in her perfomance of "Der Weg" and is by one of Germany's most prolific photographers Albert Renger-Patzsch. Wigman was photographed by many renowned artists including Hugo Erfurth, Charlotte Rudolph and Siegfried Enkelmann. Renger-Patzsch's images of the dancer often show a more statuesque and posed figure with a strong momentary expression.
