"Nieves, a Mexican-Indian beauty, was the subject of the cover of my book Mexico, and this picture was the favourite among the collection which I did for Alexei Brodovitch in the special edition of Harpers Bazaar.

Nieves, a model used by the famous painters Diego Rivera and Orozco, had great poise and presence while at the same time being shy and seemingly unaware of the fascination which she radiated. How to capture this in a photograph? Her own intuition helped create this picture of her playfully hiding behind a banana leaf in the garden of her home in Cuernavaca."

From 'Notes on the Photographs' in Fritz Henle ® 1973.

This photograph was used on the cover for Roy Flukinger "Fritz Henle: In Search of Beauty" (University of Texas Press, 2009)
