Photograph of the interior of Dakka Fort in the Khyber Pass. The fort is on a plateau and has stone exterior walls. There is a stable at the centre with a large group of men sitting beside it to the right. There are tents spaced around the fort and ploughing is taking place in the foreground. Mountains extend into the distance behind. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and soldiers involved in the conflict.
