In the 19th century, St. Louis was known as Mound City because of the presence of many Native American mounds, including Big Mound (near the site where the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge now meets I-44). As the mound was systematically dismantled from 1852 to 1869, Easterly captured a remarkable series of images documenting its destruction.
