This mysterious autoportrait with cats by Claude Cahun, made in 1927 is to our knowledge a unique print. The image presents two cats, one as a carpet and the other one in her hands. She is staring in the camera. The artist is using the light as a chiaroscuro, showing only one part of her face. By the presence of the two cats, the artist is reaching the inaccessible, strange, surreal world.

The autoportraits of Claude Cahun has largely contributed into the posthumous recognition of the artist. The National Portrait Gallery in London dedicated a show in 2017 to this theme comparing her work to the one of contemporary artist Gillian Wearing.
